Whiplash is a neck injury caused by a rapid back-and-forth movement of the head, most often in a rear-end car collision, that strains the muscles, ligaments and joints of the neck. At Carolina Active Health Chiropractic in downtown Greenville, SC, we evaluate and treat whiplash with hands-on care and rehab, and we document your injury for your insurance claim. Same-week appointments are available.
Common whiplash symptoms
- Neck pain and stiffness
- Headaches, often starting at the base of the skull
- Pain in the shoulders, upper back or between the shoulder blades
- Less range of motion when turning or tilting your head
- Dizziness or fatigue
- Tingling or numbness in the arms or hands
- Trouble concentrating or sleeping
Get emergency care right away if you have:
- a severe or worsening headache, confusion or loss of consciousness,
- weakness in your arms or legs, or numbness that is spreading,
- loss of bladder or bowel control, or
- severe neck pain after a high-speed crash.
Why whiplash symptoms can show up days later
Adrenaline and the shock of a collision can hide pain at first. Over the next 24 to 72 hours, inflammation builds in the injured tissue and symptoms like stiffness and headaches often appear. That's normal, and it's a good reason to get evaluated even if you felt fine right after the crash.
How we treat whiplash
Treatment starts with a thorough exam to find out what's injured and to rule out anything that needs X-rays, which we can take in our office when clinically indicated, or a referral to another provider. From there, your plan may include:
- gentle chiropractic care to restore joint motion in the neck and upper back,
- soft-tissue therapy, such as Active Release Technique, for tight, guarded muscles,
- laser therapy to help with pain and inflammation, and
- a progressive rehab program to rebuild neck strength, posture and range of motion.
For most whiplash injuries, staying gently active and moving the neck within comfortable limits is better than keeping it still for long periods. We'll show you what's safe to do at home and progress your exercises as you improve. Recovery varies from person to person; we'll track your progress with re-checks along the way.

We keep detailed records of your symptoms, exam findings and progress, and we coordinate with your attorney if you have one. To learn more about our care after a crash, see our car accident and personal injury care page.
Whiplash FAQs
What does whiplash feel like?
Most people notice neck pain and stiffness, often with headaches at the base of the skull, sore shoulders or upper back, and difficulty turning the head. Some also feel dizzy, tired or have tingling in the arms.
Can whiplash show up days after a car accident?
Yes. Symptoms commonly appear or get worse 24 to 72 hours after a crash, once adrenaline wears off and inflammation builds in the injured tissue.
Should I wear a neck brace for whiplash?
For most whiplash injuries, long periods in a soft collar aren't recommended. Gentle movement within comfortable limits usually helps more. Follow your provider's advice, especially if imaging or a medical exam is still pending.
How is whiplash treated?
Treatment usually combines gentle hands-on care for the neck and upper back, soft-tissue therapy and a progressive exercise program, with your plan adjusted as you improve.
How long does whiplash take to heal?
It varies. Recovery depends on the severity of the injury, your health before the accident and how your body responds to care. We'll re-check you regularly and adjust your plan as you progress.
