Rethinking Tension Headaches

Tension headaches are often blamed on “bad posture,” but new research suggests there’s more to the story.

In a recent study, individuals experiencing tension headaches showed reduced neck mobility and lower endurance in key stabilizing muscles of the neck and core. Interestingly, their forward head posture wasn’t significantly different from those without headaches. This points to something deeper than just how you sit or stand.

Your body relies on a coordinated system—muscles, joints, and movement patterns all working together. When that system isn’t functioning efficiently, it can place added strain on the neck and surrounding structures, contributing to recurring tension and discomfort.

Rather than focusing on posture alone, a more effective approach to tension headaches is improving how your spine moves and how well your muscles support that movement. Enhancing mobility and endurance can help your body handle daily stress more efficiently—often reducing the frequency and intensity of headaches over time.

If you’ve been dealing with ongoing tension headaches or neck tightness, it may be time to look beyond posture and address the bigger picture.
